Longtermist Reading Group

A deep dive into longtermism.

Come hang out, eat snacks, and discuss longtermism with us in a casual setting! The big idea we’ll be exploring is that if time itself doesn’t change the moral weight of a person’s life, then most of the moral importance may lie in the far future—where countless generations could exist but are currently unrepresented in all sorts of ways (including politics, the economy, and more). This raises questions about the potential importance of existential risk reduction, the “time of perils” hypothesis, and how longtermist thinking might (or might not) shape what we should do with our lives.

We’ll read and talk through both the case for longtermism and its critiques, but don’t worry—the readings will be light and not required. We recommend that you’ve completed the Intro Fellowship (or have equivalent background knowledge), though it isn’t required. Time and dates are TBD—just come hang out, eat snacks, and think about the future with us!
